An Interview With MaryJo
A new single release from MaryJo has a beautiful way of delivering a cinematic and expansive pop tonality that is very emotionally driven but feels natural and flowing with a beautiful approach and character that has a unique way of building in intensity.
"Should Be Us" is a classic story that gives off a very personal and honest feel and touches on someone that is broken up with their significant other but is still in love with them, and if any of you have been in a situation like that you can completely understand where the song is coming from and the way that it's delivered is perfectly relatable so that it really strikes a chord.
The tractors have a very freeing and orchestrated aesthetic to it and there was a lot of attention to detail during the creation of the song but it never loses the emotional platform or heart that it was really built from in the first place. Actually, I should say, the heartbreak that it was built from.
The track features Michael Gerow who does an amazing job of delivering that reciprocating character and it's something that feels almost theatrical like you're watching a scene out of a play and the production also feels that way.
The two of them really do an outstanding job of working together on this track, and their chemistry is undeniable.
This single leaves a mark and has such a great impact because these two were able to nail that vibe of restless sort of heartbreak and frustration with the situation and wishing it could be different.
This is a big part of why it's so relatable and understandable.
This song was such a big production and it has a way of glimmering, and sticking with you for a very long time after it's ended.
A beautiful and intense but graceful performance from both artists really make this song powerful to the point where it will affect you no matter who you are.
You might end up thinking of someone from your own past even or, it might cause certain memories to pop into your head, but either way, you will have a reaction to the immensity of this track and how it's portrayed.
With the release of such a wonderfully woven and beautifully performed single, we wanted to sit down with Mary Jo to find out where this came from, and how Michael became part of it as well.
Here's what we found out.
TSWS: Hey maryjo! Let's talk a bit about "Should Be Us"! This track was certainly powerful and felt completely genuine!! Where did this song come from?
Hi! Thank you, thank you. When we wrote it, we started with a guitar. Everyone connected with the idea about this in some capacity, Nolan Sipe really helped hoan in on how we could tie all together and make it a real story.
TSWS: The song has some different pop approaches in there. Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
My biggest musical influences are Lewis Capaldi and Julia Michaels.
TSWS: How did Michael Gerow become a part of this release?!
Michael and I were on the same season of American Idol. We were already familiar with one another. When I was thinking about who I wanted on the song, my team and I reached out to him. The experience has been great and we have become even better friends now!
TSWS: Are you planning any tour or live shows?
I will be playing Summerfest in Milwaukee and I am so excited for that one.
TSWS: Who's in your headphones right now?
"The Beaches"
TSWS: What kind of things inspire you to write songs?
Literally everything. I pull so much from my experiences as well as my friends' experiences.
TSWS: What's coming next for you? Anything in the works even now?
More shows more writing sessions. I'm always creating with the most talented people.
TSWS: Before we go, what would you like to express to fans of the music?
I am so happy you guys are on this journey. It's going to be a super fun one and there is more than a lot coming!
